IFR supporting NutraFormulate Conference

IFR is pleased to support NutraFormulate – Ingredients for Healthy Living, which will be held at the NMM Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, 20-21  March 2013.

Richard Mithen and Paul Kroon from the Institute of Food Research will be speaking at NutraFormulate – Ingredients for Healthy Living Food for Thought Conference in March 2013. The Food & Health Network will also be attending the associated NutraResearch exhibition.

The event is focussed on health claims for foods, a very hot topic at the moment with new regulations coming into force. The conference will address the challenges companies in the food industry face in producing healthy foods, and the science that needed to back up health claims for these foods.

Richard Mithen will talk about the development and commercialisation of Beneforté broccoli, giving an inside view of how many years of publicly-funded research have delivered a variety of broccoli with higher levels of a key phytonutrient, and how the evidence for its health benefits have been uncovered.

Paul Kroon is an expert in the field of polyphenols and he will talk about the current state of evidence for the health benefits of polyphenols and relate this to European health claims for polyphenol-containing products. Paul Kroon is the coordinator of a new EU-wide project, BACCHUS, that is aiming to help SMEs develop food products to improve cardiovascular health and generate the robust scientific data needed for health claims. He also leads a research group that focus on understanding the fundamental mechanisms by which polyphenols in foods are taken up by the body and metabolized, and how these metabolites provide health benefits.

The Food & Health Network, IFR’s Knowledge Exchange Network, will be exhibiting in the NutraResearch area of NutraFormulate. FHN bridges the gap between the science of the Institute of Food Research and its application to industry.

Registration for free attendance at NutraFormulate is now open, and we look forward to seeing you there.
